Welcome to the Leviathan

Leviathan is a trillogy of YA sci-fi books written by Scott Westerfeld, and they are some of my favourite books of all time. The first book, Leviathan, was released in 2009 and it's two sequels, Behemoth and Goliath, were released in 2010 and 2011 respectivley. All three books were fantastically illustrated by Keith Thompson. All art in this shrine is his unless otherwise stated! click here to see his website!

The series takes place in an alternate history version of World War One. The Allies, (Great Britain, Russia, Japan, France and Italy) in this world are the "Darwinists," who play with the genes of animals to create fantastical beasties. The Flechette Bats are able to eat iron spikes and release them onto the enemy, Huxley Ascenders are huge jellyfish that fly through the air like hot air balloons, and glowworms can be made to light up with a whistle. The biggest and best of these fabricated beasites is the Leviathan herself, a giant living whale that is also an airship.

The Central Powers, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire, are "Clankers." Their war machines are quite different from the Darwainists. Walkers, giant tank-like constructions that move with legs and arms controlled by a pilot inside. Small, two-legged Walkers scurry between trees while huge, 8-legged monstrosities tear up the battlefields.

There is so much more cool stuff going around in the world and so many more incredible creatures and machines. The main characters have been two of my most important blorbos since I was 14 and I am SO hype to talk more about them! Check out the book trailer (featuring a TON of Keith Thompson's incredible art) and check out my other pages to see more about this great series!!
